Tufted Puffin Diving

Project type

Oil painting

Date

November 2025

Tufted puffins are native to the Puget Sound region along the outer coast with historical breeding sites on Smith Island, the San Juans, and along the Strait of Juan de Fuca. They can dive up to 100 feet and hold their breath for up to 2 minutes under the water in search of food. Conservation efforts to protect their populations include reducing fishing bycatch, preventing oil spills, and mitigating the effects of climate change by restoring habitat resiliency.
