Mechanisms of Soil Carbon Sequestration

Project type

Graphic Illustration

Date

November 2025

Healthy soil fights climate change by capturing atmospheric carbon through three primary mechanisms: organic, inorganic, and microbial carbon sequestration! Carbon is stored in the soil organically in plant residues, microbes, and humic substances. Long-term carbon stabilization occurs inorganically through the formation of carbonates and bicarbonate adsorption while microorganisms regulate carbon cycling supporting sequestration.
